Why Sustainable Meat Alternatives are the Future of Eco-Conscious Eating

The Tomorrow Foundation is excited to announce our new partnership with Earth Nut Foods®, a company focused on producing sustainable, plant-based burgers and other meat alternatives made from natural ingredients with no artificial colors or preservatives.

Meat alternatives are steadily rising in popularity, and not just among the vegetarian community. Many meat-eaters are starting to see the benefits of swapping out their beef patties for plant-based alternatives because of the health benefits of cutting back on meat consumption.

Because of companies like Earth Nut Foods®, plant-based meat substitutes are easier to access than ever, further increasing people’s appetites for a little more veg in their diets.

But the benefits of sustainable meat alternatives go beyond the personal health benefits. Cutting back on meat consumption and replacing it with plant-based products instead has a massive positive impact on our environment.

Here are some of the reasons why:

Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions

According to a study conducted by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, plant-based meat alternatives generated approximately ten times fewer greenhouse gasses during their production than comparable beef-based products (such as hamburgers).

With global warming knocking on our doorstep every day, reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our food supply could not be more crucial. By switching over to plant-based meat alternatives, we can begin to take steps towards turning back the clock on climate change.

Reduced Water Consumption

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is just the start. An assessment of another popular meat alternative producer, Impossible Foods, in 2019 verified by research firm Quantis found that their meat alternative used 87% less water than beef and reduced local water contamination by 92%.

Freshwater is a valuable resource, and thanks to climate change, disastrous droughts continue to threaten agricultural communities globally. By switching to sustainable, plant-based meats, we can conserve our freshwater resources while increasing our food supply’s sustainability.

Less Land Required to Produce More Food

Studies have shown that if the world were to adopt an entirely plant-based diet, we would reduce global agricultural land use from 4.1 billion hectares to just 1 billion. That is the most extreme example, but the fact remains that over 3 billion hectares of global agricultural space are dedicated to pasture and feed-crops for animals we consume.

The data further shows that regardless of the entire world deciding to “go vegan,” it only takes ¼ of the same acreage to produce the same amount of plant-based protein vs. animal-based protein.

By switching to sustainable meat alternatives, we can tackle greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation that occurs to make room for more pasture land.

Overall, plant-based meat alternatives, like the delicious patties produced by Earth Nut Foods, are poised to play a significant role in creating a healthier, more sustainable diet for people worldwide.

And when you purchase some delicious products from Earth Nut Foods, a portion of the proceeds will go to The Tomorrow Foundation to fund services, community outreach, education, and advocacy. This work aims to save our planet’s natural resources so that future generations can continue to enjoy a clean, healthy environment.
